Explore the City of David, the Pool of Siloam and Jerusalem’s newly uncovered Pilgrimage Road in this special Jerusalem Dateline episode. Discover biblical archaeology beneath modern Jerusalem as Chris Mitchell, Julie Stahl and Joshua Swanson follow the ancient route worshippers traveled toward the Temple Mount during the Second Temple period and the time of Jesus.

From the place associated with Jesus healing the man born blind in John 9 to an ancient stepped street lined with shops, this journey brings the history of biblical Jerusalem into view. Walk underground through archaeological excavations connecting the Pool of Siloam to the foot of the Temple Mount, and explore the Jewish and Christian heritage of one of the world’s most significant biblical sites.

Archaeologist Eli Shukron recounts the unexpected 2004 discovery of the Pool of Siloam and the excavation that revealed its connection to the Pilgrimage Road. Israel Antiquities Authority archaeologist Itamar Burko explains discoveries spanning Jerusalem’s ancient water systems, Hezekiah’s Tunnel and a reservoir wall dated to the ninth century BC. Watch as his team finds an ancient coin during filming.

Along the Pilgrimage Road, U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee joins Joshua Swanson to discuss biblical archaeology, the Jewish roots of Christianity and the historic Jewish connection to Jerusalem. Their conversation also explores the significance of the road’s opening, attended by Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

At the Temple Mount, Israeli tour guide Te’ena Reichbach Ben Haim joins Julie Stahl to explore the southern steps, ritual baths and the Songs of Ascent in Psalms 120–134. Discover how Psalm 122 connects with the experience of pilgrims going up to Jerusalem to worship.

Ze’ev Orenstein of the City of David explains why the original Jerusalem of King David lies outside today’s Old City walls, and how British explorer Charles Warren’s work in 1867, commissioned by Queen Victoria, helped reveal its location.

The episode also features Israel Antiquities Authority representative Rebecca Motahedeh-Cohen presenting a remarkable ancient gold bell and a silver shekel bearing ancient Hebrew inscriptions. Could the bell have belonged to a Second Temple high priest? Hear the possible connection to Exodus 28, the uncertainty surrounding its ownership and Eli Shukron’s interpretation in an extended interview exclusive to this YouTube edition.

Hosted and reported by Chris Mitchell, Julie Stahl and Joshua Swanson.
