Ep 14: Five Greek Words – Gift (3 of 5)
hi there tom Mahairas with. It’s all greek to me and we have been talking to Vicki, my wife who also is a greek student and we’ve just kind of been chatting away about what those words mean to her, the word grace, the word forgiveness, the word gift, the word joy and the word thanksgiving. They’re all connected through the rood haar haris, haris um charisma, hara and Afghanistan. All connected in the greek language and I’m just so glad that you’ve joined us again with, it’s all greek to me, we’re gonna dig deeper into the third word. Now, as we look at charisma, which is, we get the english word transliterated charisma or charismatic. So we’ll talk about that in a moment. What is exciting for me Vicky is that we can actually dig deep into the greek language because getting into the greek, we peel back the onion, so to speak, we actually see what’s inside, we we actually understand clear what God is intending when he gives us an instruction and when you have a word like Mahairas, which is Grace, and then you have a word like terrorism, which is forgiveness, that comes from Grace. And now we’re looking at the word charisma and that’s translated as a gift, a gift, but it’s transliterated, which means you kind of skew it into from the greek into the english and we get the word charismatic from it. Uh and so when you look at that word and charismatic means somebody who is endowed with gifts or attraction and of course, in religious circles, it’s different, but we want to look at this word, we want to look at a couple of places where it’s found and when you look at the scriptures and it is found in first Corinthians chapter 12, it is found in romans chapter 12, It is found in first Peter chapter four verse 10 and let’s just look a couple of these uh words charisma right, right here. And of course we have a picture of the beautiful baby jesus uh and mary charisma which is the gift that God has given us. You have a verse of scripture that you could share about that which is found in romans chapter six and verse 23 right. What does it say for the wages of sin is death. But the free gift of God is eternal life through jesus christ our Lord. So here’s you know the death and the life jesus christ was born in that manger, he was born to die in the very beginning the angel said you’re going to have a son and you’re going to call him jesus because he will save his people from their sins. Well how did he do that? He went to the cross, He who knew no sin became sin for us that we could have the righteousness of God in him and what did he provide through that? The gift of God which is and that word gift is charisma, the gift of God which is eternal life through jesus christ our Lord fantastic. You wanna just pick it up there a little bit about that. Well I’m just thinking that jesus himself is a gift of grace to us. Yes, I mean that’s a beautiful picture that he’s totally a gift from the heavens from the father son and holy spirit and he was the one who has chosen to come and become a man and gift us with the grace of heaven and change all of our lives drastically. And that’s exactly what the the endowment from heaven, that’s exactly what the word means and uh and so when you look at this concept and then you go to the the versus scripture like romans 12, 6 since we have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, each of us is to exercise them accordingly and then it goes on to the seven gifts of prophecy according to his proportion of his faith and so forth. So now we have gifts, there are seven beautiful uh charisma to uh charisma. The m A suffix at the end, it means it comes from what precedes it, which is hard, is in this case and these gifts, the prophet, the teacher, the leader, the servant, the mercy, the giver, All of these gifts come from God’s grace is this fantastic. So pick up, you have any other thoughts on that and any other scriptures that you’d like to share. Yes, I was thinking about um first timothy 44 because God has entrusted us with gifts. They’re not just for ourselves. We’re not supposed to sit home and pleasure ourselves with our gifts were supposed to serve, we’re supposed to deacon. It says in one of the verses the gifts of God, that’s uh that’s in first peter chapter uh four and verse 10. Yeah, you can read it if you want as each one has received a special gift, employ it in serving one another as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. So that word employ it is the word via kono’s or the Laconia and deacon. It so to speak, in serving one another as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. It’s a it’s a fabulous thing, isn’t it? As each one has received a special gift. You know what I love about this versus scripture Vicky. The concept of charisma is that God has given his grace to all of us. But when we accept jesus christ, his gift uh and have eternal life through him. Now, he also gives us what he gives us gifts and each one of us gets a gift that says as each one has received a special gift is not just for me. So the Mahairases MMA the gift of God is yes, just like you said, jesus christ when he came in in uh you know, he came as a man, the grace of God appeared bringing salvation to us, john chapter one where it talks about the fact that you know, he came as a man full of grace and truth. So this was God’s gift. And he came we received him the gift of God eternal life through jesus christ. And then he also gives us these other gifts by the power of his holy spirit. And right here it talks about is each one of us have received a special gift, Employ it in serving one another as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. So now God’s Grace and the word they’re typically, which is like the rainbow, manifold, you know, is communicated to us in a variety of very uh in various ways variegated the word is and God’s grace is that it’s variegated. It comes through the body of christ as each one of us are employing our gift as good stewards econo most of of the, you know, giving an account to God for what he’s given us and how we serve here on earth of the of the uh good stewards of the manifold grace of God. God’s grace is not one sided. It’s not one kind, it is so vast. So let’s talk about that. Talk about how that works in the body of christ. How have you seen it? Well, I’m thinking that God knows each of us so well. Our personalities are how he put in us, some of us love art and music and some of us were so very vary ated different than everybody else. But he gave us each a gift. And we should never want a gift that somebody else has or covet it or want that gift because God knew the gift he gave us would be the one that would really fulfill us. And when I was reading the scriptures, um first timothy 4 14, it says do not neglect the spiritual gift within you, which was bestowed upon you through prophetic utterance with the laying on of hands, but take pains with these things and be absorbed. And then so that your progress may be evident to all and pay close attention to yourself and to your teaching and persevere in these things, both for yourself and for others. The gift God gives us is not for ourselves. We are a body if the hands don’t serve if the mouth doesn’t speak. If the eyes don’t see and give vision to the church and to the vision that God has for people to come to him, uh, something will lack, there’ll be neglected great. And then the other verse was second timothy 16. Don’t neglect the spiritual gift God has given you. Yeah, he says there and for this reason, I remind you to kindle a fresh the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands. In other words, fan that flame. Yes, God has given us a gift, but it’s our responsibility to make sure we don’t put that under a bushel that we’re not just gonna be lazy, that we’re not, we’re not going to be disobedient. God’s gifts are given to us to utilize for his glory in serving other people. And as we serve other people and as we do what he wants us to do, then we will find fulfillment in the gift that God has given us. So how about just kind of wrapping up what you just had here, what you just had here Vicky in in terms of this gift is charisma uh, from first peter chapter four verse 10 as each one of us have received a special gift, employ it in serving one another as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. So the grace of God is viewed as being many colored many coming from many directions. But it also talks about the fact that we have to uh we have to employ this gift. We have to serve other people in it and we’re going to give an account one day to our Lord. So uh, maybe you could just comment, I would just say we’re, we have to bear fruit. A living tree, a living plant is a fruit bearer. And where as long as we’re alive, God is expecting us to bear fruit for him for his kingdom. So we need to pray that God would show us our gift and serve and be really fruitful. We will be so happy in life Once we get into serving God with joy and with his grace and now bearing fruit with the gifts that he’s given us. So in closing charisma is the gift from God. It comes down through jesus christ. And then once he left he has given us the Holy Spirit, the third person of the Trinity who gives these gifts, the seven gifts. It talks about that in Romans chapter 12 as we looked at it before that, he gives each person one of these gifts, at least one, maybe two, maybe three. And of course it is the Lord jesus christ again, who is managing all this and here we are now that we are to employ these gifts and serving other people. And as we do that, God’s grace is gonna come through a my gift through your gift. God’s grace is gonna come through that other person that may not have a speaking gift or a great gift. God’s grace is gonna come to each individual life as we employ it faithfully obediently in doing what God wants us to do. God bless you and continue to study getting deeper in the greek. It’s all greek to me, hi there tom Mahairas with this third word from grace, forgiveness and gift or gifts have charisma or charismatic had asthma is charismatic. We get the word from that ma, the M. A. At the end of a word means it comes from and so hard is that produces gift and this word is fabulous. That’s used in several places. It’s all it’s also used in uh romans chapter six and verse 23 where it says that the wages of sin is death. But the gift the hotties ma to through the gift of God is eternal life through jesus christ our Lord. So you know when you look at A picture of the Lord, Jesus Christ and we uh we want to just take a look at the baby, Jesus and Mary the mother. You know, you look that’s the gift. The baby is the gift, but it’s it’s not you know there are many babies but there was only one baby born to a virgin. And there was only one baby fulfilling all 365 prophecies. And there was only one baby that was born in Bethlehem prophecy by the profits to come at exactly that time. And this baby was the gift 483 years after the rebuilding of the temple Daniel chapter nine. And this baby was the gift of God to this planet. God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son that whosoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life because God did not send his son in the world to condemn the world, but that the world through him should be saved. So in a very real sense, the gift is the baby that brings with it grace and forgiveness and gifts and joy and thanksgiving. This baby is is everything wrapped up the fullness of God, through in bodily form, through this baby, jesus. But then jesus christ it says in romans 6 23 the gift of God is eternal life. But this life is in his son first john chapter five and verse 9, 10 and 11 and 12. This life is in his son. If you, if you read that passage, if you have the sun, you have life first john chapter five, if you don’t have the son, you don’t have the life these things. Uh the apostle john says, I wrote to you who believe in the name of the son of God in order that you may know diagnosis, jean Osco that you have eternal life and believing you may have life. Think about it, he wrote it down and jesus christ is the one who not only uh gives us life, he is eternal life. You know, that’s what the that’s what it says in first, John in Chapter five, you have the sun, you have the life. The gift of God is eternal life. Yes, but it’s in jesus christ. So if you have the sun, you have this eternal life, this erroneous, this uh eternal life that doesn’t start when you die. You already have it now with God, the father God, the son and God the holy spirit. So the first and foremost thing about this Karisma, this gift from God that comes from his grace is that it is eternal life it is, that we are sins are forgiven. It is that we have been redeemed. It is that we are becoming, we have become Children of God by faith in jesus christ. So that that would be the first thing. The second thing is that we, each of us not only have jesus christ living inside of us and have received eternal life as a free gift, this charisma, eternal life as this gift uh charisma. But it also says in romans chapter 12 the first few verses, it talks about the fact that We it says, since we have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us. Each of us is to exercise them accordingly. So every single one of us receive one of seven gifts according to Romans, chapter 12. You have one of seven gifts, fantastic that God tells us in romans chapter 12 what these gifts are and that each one of us are very special because God has planned for each of us to have some part in his body, notice what it says and since we have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us. So gift Karisma is connected to the hottest, the grace that was given to us. They’re connected right there, you see that right in verse six romans 12 6, let each exercise them accordingly. In other words we are to deacon, those gifts we are to serve in those gifts for other people. Accordingly. If and then it tells you what those are prophecy, according to prophecy, service in his serving by faith. That is uh he who teaches in his teaching or he who exhorts in his exhortation. He who gives with liberality, he who leads with diligence. There are these are seven specific gifts and God gives them specifically to as he wills to the people. And then the rest of this chapter, beginning with verse nine gives you a description of those gifts Phenomenal and this particular Romans 12 passage is the Holy Spirit that is giving these gifts. And how do I know that? Because when you go to first Corinthians in chapter 12, let’s just go there in first Corinthians in chapter 12, it talks about the variety of gifts in uh in beginning with verse four, there are varieties of gifts, but the same spirit. So these different the word charisma here in this very same verse in verse first Corinthians 12 verse four, it’s speaking about these seven gifts. This these uh charisma to or charisma it says, but the same spirit. So the spirit of God is the one who’s doing that in Romans chapter 12 and then there are varieties uh of ministries the corneas and but the same Lord, this is the Lord jesus christ. So the trinity has shown here first you have the holy spirit, then you have the Lord jesus christ. in verse five, there are varieties of ministries, the word there is the attorneys Deacon Ing’s and that’s found in Ephesians chapter four where he gave some apostles and prophets and evangelists and pastor teachers to equip the saints to do the work of serving, serving the Laconia to the building up of the body of christ until we all attain to them to the perfection of our faith, to the mature man, until we all become like jesus christ, we’re going to be in our image and our inner being like jesus christ and that’s what the goal is of the apostle prophet evangelist, pastor teacher to help the believers in the body of christ to become like jesus christ And then verse six and there are varieties of effects effects but the same God and this is the father who works all things in all persons, this is an Oedema and that human has to do with energizing how God the father is working in the body, so you know you say well God the father, where is he? He’s working in the body, jesus christ is working in the body through his leaders through the people that have speaking gifts and building up the rest of the body and he’s working and the Holy spirit of God is working in the body, distributing those seven charisma to the gifts that that we are receiving so that we can build up the body of christ In 1st Corinthians chapter 12. Now there’s another passage of scripture That I want to point to and that one is found in first Peter in Chapter three notice what it says in our overhead here as each one of us has received a special gift Employions and serving one another as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. Now this is a fantastic versus scripture. Mm First of all, it highlights the importance of every individual believer that each one of us are valuable. Each one of us have a special gift. God looks and created each one of us to be a part of the body of christ and has a purpose in that and they’re, you know, don’t feel like well what can I do? You know, I don’t have a, I’m not a preacher, I’m not a teacher, I don’t have much money. Hey, listen, every one of us have a special gift and your gift might be the very, very gift that is needed, whether it’s serving, whether it’s teaching, whether it’s exhorting or whether you have the gift of mercy. You visit somebody in their home or in the hospital and you encourage them and prevent them maybe from committing suicide. You have no idea, uh, maybe you have the gift of giving and a portion of funds comes uh to you and you distribute that to a person that is needy and how in in an incredible way God uses that, you know, a lot of people talk about, well that person’s got charisma. What are people talking about? Is it uh their leadership style, is it their charm, is it their languages, that their appearance? God’s word deals with this word charisma or charisma in a very special way, as it says here, as each one of us have received the special gift, this charisma employed and serving one another. Now that word employed and serving as the Laconia that we ought to have a desire to serve other people with the gifts that God gives us with one another as good stewards. Now that word Stewart is Economos, because we’re going to give an account of the gift that God has given us if you have the gift of giving, if you have the gift of serving, if you have the gift of preaching, if you have the gift of teaching, whatever your gift is is not for you, it’s for the body of christ and we’re going to give an account second Corinthians five in verse 10, the day of jesus christ at the beam, A seat at the judgment seat of jesus christ, we’re going to give an account of what we’ve done in this body, good or bad. So we have to be good stewards, Economos. Uh you know, that word is echoes, is a house and uh somebody who takes care of the affairs of the house of the manifold grace of God. So the grace of God is variegated, it’s like a rainbow and uh it gives different colors and God uses different believers with different gifts. The minister to the different parts of the body. So all of us could grow in the manifold grace of God. God’s grace is not gonna come. Just threw one gift or through reading the bible only or through praying only God’s gifts. God’s grace rather is gonna come to each of us as each of the body of christ each other, members of the body of christ implements their gifts and serves the body. God is gonna provide grace. Please be a grace open door to the people around. You don’t shut your gift to yourself, but just be very open with it. So important. Now, I want to show you, let’s just look at second timothy for instance, and for this reason I remind you to kindle a fresh anna’s open evo again bring to life the fire. You know, he says, because you know, you could get cold as a believer. You don’t hang out with christians, you’re not reading the bible, you’re not praying, you’re not going out evangelizing, You’re not serving God with all your heart soul mind and strength, You don’t love God with all your heart soul mind and strength. And what happens is you let one day go by, you let another day go by and before you know it, I mean you’re cold, you’re not hanging around with christians like the charcoal in a fire. You put them together and the fire comes up here it says kindle of fresh the gift of God the harassment of God which is uh you which is in you through the laying on of my hands. You see he talks about how we affect one another. The apostle paul through his contact with timothy and training timothy and disciple timothy as he tells us in second timothy in chapter two you know what I received I’m giving to you so that you may be able to give to others also by the grace of God. This is so very important. Yesterday I looked at a video that I took about 10 years ago of a young man who came to transformation life center. One of our drug rehabs upstate new york. And this young man by the name of Austin was a heroin addict. He was a mess, he was a thief, he was a liar, he was down and out and he came and he got saved. He accepted the Lord, jesus christ. He repented of his sins. He asked christ to come in his life and we began to disciple him one day I taught him how to share his faith. I took the bible, I opened up, I showed him the four basic laws that we have all sinned that the wages of sin is death. But the gift of God is eternal life through jesus christ our Lord that if I confess with my mouth in the Lord jesus and believe in my heart that God raised him from the dead, I shall be saved. That whoever will call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. He said to me, I got it, I got it. That week his father came to him and said Austin, what happened to you? How did you change? You were a thief, You were a liar, I couldn’t control you. You were a heroin addict breaking into our house and now you’re clean and you’re you’re talking about God and you’re reading the bible what happened to you and his son Austin, I told him about jesus christ took the things that I shared with him and led his father to jesus christ and his father got saved. Yesterday I looked at that video And I was so excited I try I found Austin’s phone number called him and he answered and I found out that for the past 10 years he has been a pastor in New Jersey in a very large church and you know what kind of pastor, he is he is the outreach pastor and international evangelism pastor. All because he was trained way back when and through my training him and imparting onto him evangelism for other people. He today is a servant of God, training other people to do evangelism listen, that’s the kind of gift he’s talking about in second timothy chapter one and verse six right here. And for this reason I remind the Kindle of Fresh the Gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands. May God help you as you understand this gift hot Esma, not anyone can just go up to a pulpit and begin to preach or teach, you have to be anointed, you have to be called, you have to be very careful that you know, your life is clean when you step out into the arena to go and let people know about jesus christ. And as God shows you what’s wrong inside and you humbly fall down and repent on a daily basis. God will build you up and consecrate you. So one day you can really do what God wants you to do. So I say to you, your gift as a in the body of christ is the anointing that God has given you to serve the body in whichever way God has empowered you and motivated you in the church. God bless you. Until next time. It’s all greek to me with tom Mahairas, let your friends know about the program and we’ll see you next time.
