In 2 Corinthians 4:1–6, we find Paul making a series of great declarations concerning the ministry of the Gospel—declarations that stand to encourage today’s pastors in their vital work:
Therefore, having this ministry by the mercy of God, we do not lose heart. But we have renounced disgraceful, underhanded ways. We refuse to practice cunning or to tamper with God’s word, but by the open statement of the truth we would commend ourselves to everyone’s conscience in the sight of God. And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. For what we proclaim is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, with ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake. For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

We can understand Paul’s second declaration in this passage more clearly by taking a look at the Greek. As ministers of the Gospel, he says, we have renounced the “krypta” approach, the “secret” approach. We are not going to be those who are “aischynes”—that is, “shameful”; we have given up, as the KJV puts it, “the hidden things of shame.” Similarly, we refuse to practice “panourgia”—a word that is translated “cunning” in the ESV and “deception” in the NIV—which, in contemporary terms, is the characteristic of the unscrupulous politician or the ingratiating secondhand car salesmen. J. B. Phillips helpfully paraphrases Paul’s declaration, “We use no hocus-pocus, no clever tricks, no dishonest manipulation of the Word of God.”
For some of us, to say that we do not use deception will present an immediate challenge. We saw last time that as pastors, we are faced by so much that causes us to lose heart. If we are honest with ourselves, we must acknowledge that one of the reasons for our loss of heart is because we live in an easy-going, theologically vague, “harmlessly” accommodating context in which theology is often the product of the deceived and the deceiving. In the face of such circumstances, it can be tempting to fill our preaching with many other things besides the clear, straightforward presentation of God’s Word.
In a booklet entitled Simplicity in Preaching, J. C. Ryle warns against such cunning, deceptive tactics:
Let us beware of fireworks in our preaching. “Beautiful” sermons, “brilliant” sermons, “clever” sermons, “popular” sermons, are often sermons which have no effect on the congregation, and do not draw men to Jesus Christ. Let us aim so to preach, that what we say may really come home to men’s minds and consciences and hearts, and make them think and consider. 1
Given such words, it’s no wonder that Ryle once remarked, “I always felt that popularity, as it was called, was a very worthless thing and a very bad thing for man’s soul.” 2 Surely, then, we should avoid employing deception as a means of achieving man’s approval.
