Spring Training in Christ: Strength for the New Season

“But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” 1 Corinthians 15:57

Spring is no longer a distant dream, but real, and knocking at our front door. With the change of seasons comes a sense of renewal, growth, and fresh beginnings. Just as athletes commit to training in the spring to prepare for the challenging season ahead, we too must be consistently strengthening our faith and conditioning our hearts for the battles that lie before us. As followers of Christ, we must cast off the weights and worries of this world, and walk in victory. No matter the obstacles—physical, emotional, or spiritual—our strength is found in Christ, who has already secured our triumph!

“In all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.” Romans 8:37

One particular Spring comes to mind. It was early in my faith walk and I had reached my breaking point. Physically exhausted, emotionally drained, and spiritually weary, I began to wonder if I would ever experience the victory spoken about in the Scriptures. No matter how hard I tried, it felt like I was dragging the weight of the world in an uphill battle. I prayed, sought advice, and worked tirelessly to change my situation, but nothing seemed to shift or solve my problems.

In my frustration, I finally cried out to God:

“LORD, I CAN”T DO THIS ANYMORE! I NEED YOU TO FIGHT THIS BATTLE FOR ME!”

And in that moment, His peace settled over me. The victory wasn’t about my strength, it was about surrendering all of me to His power.

“The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.” Exodus 14:14

From that day forward, there was a drastic change to my mindset. Like the change from winter to spring, from death to new life. Instead of asking for advice from every Tom, Dick or Sherry, I declared God’s Word over my life. I refused to allow fear to control me, stepped forward in faith, and began living in the victory that Christ had already provided!

“The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears them; He delivers them from all their troubles.” Psalm 34:17

The anything but subtle Spring shift in my perspective changed everything! When I think about King David saying that God delivers him from all his troubles, it should bring confidence to all believers. David was leading a nation, and had a few troubles. It doesn’t mean life will suddenly become easy, but it will offer clarity to every challenge knowing Christ has already been victorious. God equips me for victory when I fully trust in Him.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek His will in all you do, and He will show you which path to take.” Proverbs 3:5-6

God met me in the battlefield of my mind. When I surrendered to Him, He didn’t just change my situation—He transformed me! He taught me how to renew my thinking, live in faith, and face life with spiritual strength. It’s called Holy Spirit for a reason. Talk about a game-changer!

“Let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.” Romans 12:2

My children were very young during that season, and as I learned how to fight my battles with God’s strength, they learned to do the same. The five of us were like a well-oiled machine, a team of trusting warriors, standing firm in the faith, with God as our commander.

Parents, teach your children how to fight their spiritual battles, and watch how God transforms them into champions for His Kingdom.

“Commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these commands that I am giving you today. Repeat them again and again to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you are going to bed and when you are getting up.” Deuteronomy 6:6-7

“Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.” Proverbs 22:6

In fitness, our mindset determines our success. If we believe we are too weak, or incapable, we will likely quit. But when we train as a champion, we push past obstacles knowing every challenge makes us stronger.

Likewise, in faith, when we stand in Christ’s victory, we face trials with boldness knowing He has already overcome!

It may say Spring on the calendar, but we know there will be cold days, and maybe even snow before Spring weather will arrive. That’s not the way Christians should be, hot one day and cold the next. Let us approach this new season with big league changes, rooting out complacency and inconsistent living, while planting bouquets of blessings in the lives of others!

To experience real victory in Jesus, we must fully surrender.
