Ep 80 – Philippians Pt 4
Hi there. We just are thrilled that we’re in the pistol to the Philippians. Vicki and I were just having so much fun getting to not just one topical message, but going through this epistle were in chapter two right now. And we need to see not only the single mind of for the gospel and Chapter one that creates the joy, but also the fact that we have a submissive mind. And we see number one the example of Jesus Christ in the 1st 11 verses than the example of Paul. Then the example of Timothy, then the example of the proffered itis. And I’m just so glad you’re in this study. Take your time and read the whole of pistol. It’s only four little chapters. Come and listen to Vicki and I as we unpack it for you. Well, welcome back to it’s all Greek to me, Tom and Vicky on We’re continuing our study in the Epistle to the Philippians on the single mind the submissive mind, the spiritual mind and the secure mind. Today we’re looking at the second chapter, beginning with verse one. Vicky is going to take the 1st 11 vs and just read him, and then we’ll look at some key words. If therefore there is any encouragement in Christ if there is any consolation of love, if there is any fellowship of the spirit, if any affection in compassion make my joy complete by being of the same mind maintaining the same love, united in spirit, intent on one purpose do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind. Let each of you regard one another as more important, important than himself. Do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others. Have this attitude in yourselves, which was also in Christ. Jesus, who, although he existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God, a thing to be grassed but emptied himself, taking the form of a bond servant and being made in the likeness of men and being found in the appearance as a man. He humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Therefore, God highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name, which is above every name that at the name of Jesus, every knee should bow of those who are in heaven and on Earth and under the Earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is lord to the glory of God. The Father. Wonderful passage. There’s one of my favourite absolute favourites in terms of theology, in terms of understanding who Jesus Christ is. The parallel passage to this is John, Chapter one that takes us into eternity and refers to our Lord Jesus as the Lagos. And we are going to look at a couple of words. Vicki right now, in just the first few verses you know, when you look at encouragement by likely sees, that’s the same word is the Holy Spirit. You know that we come alongside of and encourage other people. If there is any consolation by that meth Aeon of Love, comfort, That’s the word for comfort Fellowship of the spirit. You know, Nia of the spirit. If there’s any affection in compassion. So the consolation of love, the fellowship of the spirit, the affection and the compassion make my joy complete. So now he he talks about joy again by being of the same mind, maintaining the same love united and spirit intent on one purpose. So he reiterates again the joy and identifies the four things that we need to be focused in on. And so what did you get from that? Well, in the second verse, he says, have the same mind the same. I have the same love have the same spirit. But it’s also the same soul to be united in your soul, united in spirit, united in your soul and have the same purpose. One So yes. For United and Spirit, it’s literally one word. Seem C course, right? Yes, I see he would be so we’ll hear translating United and Spirit. But seems he quotes to. It’s actually it’s actually talking. Although it’s it’s talking about spirit, it’s really saying, like one sold, you know, and that is so important here, intent on one purpose. Now that’s that’s another for Nevil and over and over again. You hear this word for never or to think. And this is what we’re talking about is how to be submissive, how to have humility, how to have unity in this aspect, intent on one purpose again from Nevil the same mind again for a never All of this is still talking about how we think and how we maintain this joy in the Christian life. Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit so important that we die to ourselves on a daily basis and pick up across the follow Christ, but with humility. This is where I think it’s talking about this particular word. Happy? No, for Orsini is talking about this submissive mind. So the key word that I want to focus in on is that we know of Rossini, which is a noun derived from happy, no slow and humble and friend. The mind, you know, properly law in humility, loneliness of human pride, self government in mind, set of humble opinion of oneself, a deep sense of one’s moral little nous. So here the the Lord Jesus through the Apostle Paul is guiding us on how to think, how to get our thinking straight and bring ourselves under. And he uses in this passage of Scripture this word tapping of Rossini and then applies it to the Lord Jesus Christ, beginning with verse, five have this attitude again, using the word for never, which is also part of that. That we know for Orsini is part of that word So uses have this attitude closet attitude instead of sometimes translated mind. Have this minding yourself, which was also in Christ Jesus. For now you begin to see how Jesus Christ really thinks who although he existed in the form of God and that word is Morphy form did not regard equality with God of thing to be grasped, held onto But he emptied himself. And that word is Kano. He literally, you know, left the glory of his reign with the angelic beings and became a man came down here. Some people call it the keno sis experience that he went through here we have him becoming a man. He’s in the form of God. He now does not hold on to that. But he submit himself to this incredible plan to become a man and finding himself a za man. He goes even further to this incredible unbelievable plant to die on a cross and to humble himself further and submit himself to that kind of bondage. In the form in the bonds is a bond servant and says in verse seven and being found in likeness of men in a found in appearance as a man to humble himself even further. So here you have Jesus Christ, the Messiah Vicky, who humbles himself, submit himself to this rigour of off as a man and totally gives himself up. And now he becomes the example for Paul Timothy n a pair for Davis on how to maintain the joy in the midst of a life that is filled with problems. So, you know, just your thoughts on these 1st 11 verses and of course, the result of that. But I just want to get your thoughts on that submission part. Well, I think you explained that part about the depth of the submission that Jesus, What a great depth for us to serve somebody with no big deal but for God himself to take on a bodily form and earthly body body at that time and put himself subject to the laws of the Earth where he is the ruler of it all is just the tremendous love that Jesus has. Something we can always share with people is when you know, feel loved by anybody. God always loves you. Just this week I share that with somebody could The person was telling me all the people that hurt that person and Mr read their intentions or behaviour. And I said, You still have to forgive those people. But don’t ever drift away from God who always loves you. Go back to him, stay close to him and don’t carry grudges towards people when you’re misinterpreted or misunderstood. The other thing is that he continues in verse 12 and says might be love it just as you have always obeyed. So you have humility, You have obedience you have in submission. You have all of that going on. And then, he says, always obey not only in my presence only but also in my absence and work out your salvation with fear and trembling for his God. Does that work in you to will and to work for his own good pleasure. So here, God is telling us, All right, you’re Christians, you’re saved, but it doesn’t stop there. You have to submit yourself and let God work out what he put in there in perfect you and material as a believer and dual things, he says now, without grumbling in this purity, grumbling will use most in disputing the these air this It’s the same word. The law. He’s most Roy’s Moses. They’re really it’s an animal appear. It’s like a grown constantly. And then the disputing is the al Oh, use most, which literally is back and forth, reasoning, self based reasoning, which inevitably grows into confusion. The yellow use moss is self based reasoning, you know, you just just just arguing complaint. I do that sometimes when people cut me off. I’m like talking to myself, the alone his most not good and and the the next part of the verse so that you will prove yourselves to be blameless, blameless. I’m empty us and innocent to different was. I can’t. They are. One has to do with that. You can’t do this spot this stainless and I carry Eos, which is an adjective derived from. And that it Karam need me, which is mingled without any mingled impurities in So God is saying, he wants us to be pure, innocent, blameless Children of God above reproach in the midst of a crooked in a perverse generation, among whom we appear as lights in the world, handling or holding fast world life in the day of Christ that I will I will have reason to glory because I did not run, inveigh nor toil in vain. And then Paul says. But even if I am being poured out as a drink offering, that’s a picture of dying, sacrificial e dying upon the sacrifice and service of your faith. I rejoice and share my joy with you or you two. I urge you rejoice in the same way and share your joy with me. So that was Paul in his example off how he went through all this stuff in God is saying, Listen, we can’t go around complaining now that we’re Christians and we’re going through trials were going through pressure. Look what happened to Jesus. Yes, he’s our example. Yeah, look what happened to Jesus and not be grumbling and not be complaining, but letting God work his plant out through our life. This is something that we cannot do on our own human strength. To have that depth of commitment and humility and and a servant hood. We have to let the Holy Spirit in us. And I think a lot of people don’t connect with the Holy Spirit on a daily basis and be still in the morning when you get up to have devotions or whenever you take time out the end of your day be still and ask God’s spirit to speak to you, to bring forth truth out of his word so that we would all become more like him were 70 two. And we did. You have to tell everybody and where we’re still allowing God to move out of us so that we can be more like Christ, Paul says. I hope in the Lord Jesus Christ the sentiment the to you surely so that I also maybe encourage when I learnt of your condition. For I have no other one else of kindred spirit, like the same spirit he saps equals the same as derived from east source equivalent to equal. See he it’s ah, different words, words, he says. He’s like my spirit, who will genuinely be concerned for your welfare, for they all seek after their own in interest, not those of Christ Jesus that to be us. To have a submissive mind with the gospel is to give up your interests, Vicky, and to really go after what interests God wants in your life. But you know of his proven worth and that he served with me in the furtherance of the gospel Like a child serving a father. We mentioned that before in the other programme therefore I hope to send him immediately. As soon as I see how things go with me. And I trust in the Lord that I my safe also in coming to you shortly. But I thought it necessary to send you Puffer dies now this guy is incredible. Might be loving brother first he’s referred to as a brother then is a fellow worker then is a fellow soldier who is also your messenger. A pasta loss. The word apostle and minister is lead to watch like a liturgy in my need Because he was longing for you all and was distressed because you had heard that he was sick. And then he goes on like that. But And what can you say about how God goes from the sublime and divine in Heavenly Jesus? Becoming a man becoming the example for us and then Paul Timothy in a proper diet is picking up. You know where our Lord Jesus Christ left off? Who went back to glory Now it’s our job. So where do you go from there on the submissive mind. I think that he gave incredible examples of humans on this planet who lived in much more difficult times than we do now and had very few comforts. And and and we’re so giving they dug deep from God’s grace. Excuse me. They just they really exemplify Jesus Christ. And this is a beautiful chapter to have the kind of mind in relationship with its a great chapter for church, for people in a church know how to work together as a team for the Gospel, not only the single mind for the guts, but also the submissive mind for the gasp. So you see this in chapter two? The example of Jesus Christ In having a submissive mind. It talks about letting that you know to be selfish. But let this mind being you, which was also in Christ. Jesus who, although he existed in the form of God, Thor and not Robbie to be equal God but humbled himself. Taking the form of a bond servant and being made in likeness of men and being found in appearance is a man. He humbled himself even further to the point of obedience. to the point of dying on the cross in God highly exalted him that at the name of Jesus, every knee will bow and every tongue shall confess that Jesus Christ is ya. Wei is curios to the glory of God. The father. It’s interesting to see the example of Christ in the way he thought it. How he humbled himself. That be no Frost Seanie. It talks about you going low down and thinking that way about yourself. He was existed in the form of God. He is God. But he now comes down and takes on the form of a bond slave of loss. And even as a solo, she goes further and obedient to the point of dying on the cross. And you see this example? You see the example of Paul in this chapter and Timothy in a puff Road itis. It says that in Thessalonians Chapter one, Verse five, Paul says, My gospel or our gospel, you see it is very personal, isn’t it? When you say my gospel, our gospel is very personal, it’s it. Stop east eval when we say I believe that the Cassini in Creed in the past, Alec reads these were what they believed, What I believe about the father and the son and of the Holy Spirit. And here Paul and First Thessalonians, 15 says, My gospel did not come to you and we’re on Lee. It’s a very personal gospel noticed. Hey, says this in first Thessalonians 15 and second Thessalonians want a 2 14 and also in second Timothy, Chapter two, verse eight, calling it my very personal to him that this message of the death Barrel resurrection had impacted him personally. That Jesus Death. Yes, it was for the whole world, Yes, but it’s also for you, and it was also for him. It’s also for me and the second thing you see here that the gospel is precise. My this gospel did not come inward on Lee, huh? Very precise. The words of the gospel of very precise as first Corinthians 15 12 and three say this is the most important message in the Bible. There’s nothing more important that Christ died for our sins, according to the Scriptures, the Old Testament 365 prophecies in the Old Testament, according to the scriptures, that he was buried according to the scriptures. It was prophesized in sub 16 that he would be buried but not state decayed or die there, but rise from the dead. Yes, according to the scriptures that he would rise from the dead. And it also says this in Romans. Chapter 10, 8 and 13. He did. He rose again from there. You confessed this with your mouth. You believe this when you heard what that he physically bottled? He arose from the dead. You see, Christianity is not about ah weak man. Be pamby milk, toast, religion or faith. It is about Jesus bleeding dying historically on that historical cross is the most documented fact in all of history and that he historically ambivalently three days later, physically embody Lee did rise from the dead according to all the incredible proofs acts Chapter one anniversary says all of the infallible proofs than you cannot dispute in John Chapter 21 how they came And they saw what their eye They understood what their mind they believe with the eye of their heart that he died, was buried and now rose again from the dead. This same Jesus that was crucified. So the gospel is precise not only that, but the gospel is powerful. It’s good news. My gospel did not come and we’re only buddy and empower the gospel. The word Evangelia. The word gospel means good news, don’t you? Don’t you know that that it’s a good message? It’s a positive message that we’re speaking, that people who was sinful, who are bound, who are slaves, who were depressed, who are manic depressant or or they are absolutely unable to stop some habit they’re involved in the Gospel is good news because it gives you power to change. That’s what the gospel does. The fourth thing is that the gospel is powerful, but it came in ability, power, not just intellectual power or some pie in the sky power but Vietnamese. It’s the ability to change, and that’s what God gives us. It gives us the ability you know to be different in our speech, in our thoughts in our walk in every part of our life. Just like Romans, 1 16 says, For that, I’m not ashamed of the gospel because it is the power of God into salvation to everyone who believes that message the Jew first and also to a degree and then the gospel is a partnership and it didn’t come by. We’re not, but also with the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the senior partner in this partnership. He’s living in us. He’s given us his word, the Bible, to verify everything we believe. But he’s also testifying in our mind and in our hearts. The conviction that we feel of sin righteous, this judgement, the conviction the world is feeling. It’s all because the Holy spirit of God is riel. Axe 13 Collisions to two first Thessalonians, 15 Hebrew, 61. He was 10 22. God is this Gospel is a partnership. The Holy Spirit is the senior partner. And then the next thing is that the gospel is the proof. The gospel is the proof that Jesus died, was buried and rose again from the dead one and incredible. It’s an empty grave. That’s the proof. And then the gospel is practical. The pattern of this message the Apostle Paul talks about that. His look at my life, he says, And just to give you an idea in the book of Ah, in the Book of Ah First Thessalonians and Chapter one Inverse five is. I’ve been preaching this verse from from memory. I just quote it right now in to you from the Scriptures for our gospel did not come to you and word only, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit And with full conviction, huh? Just as you know what kind of men we proved to be among you for your six. Now this is a tremendous proof. Is the life of the person preaching the gospel? This is why our lives have got to be pure. This is why we have to be transparent. We have to keep ourselves unstained from the world. We have to love the orphan love the widow, provide for the needs of the hurting in the needy and to keep ourselves unstained from the world. Because we have a testimony. The believer the person says he’s a Christian has to live on a different level on a different standard. He has to live for the the the citizenship of heaven. Not just Earth. Yes, We listen and obey the laws of the Earth the laws of the land, the country that we’re living in the Magistrates. But beyond that, we are even Ah higher law. We have to have higher than the the law of the Farris E. We have to be more righteous than the Farris E because that’s perfection. And on Lee Jesus Christ through Loiza meth through that credit that he has on his account, giving it to us creates that absolute righteousness that we have in Christ. He who knew no sin became sin for us rule so that we could have the righteousness of God in him. His righteousness is mine. My sinfulness is his. Because of that incredible great exchange by faith. You know, in first Thessalonians, in the first chapter you have these words mentioned You have the word grace and peace and faith and love and hope in power and joy. And I call these words the seven graces of the Christian life. Now you have these words also in Philippians and the Book of Philippians, where we focused on the gospel here has also got these very same words in Chapter one and we can impact that at a later time. But right now I want to talk to you concerning your relationship and your personal relationship with God. You see the Apostle Paul here in first Thessalonians, Chapter one in Verse five, he said, My gospel didn’t come and word on Lee, but it came in power. You see, he talked about the Grace in verse, won the peace in Verse one. He talked about Thanksgiving in Verse two. He talked about the faith in Verse three. The Love, the Hope, All of this 12345. Then he talked about the power in Verse six in Verse six. Inverse five. Rather, in Verse six, he says, You also became imitators of us in of the Lord, having received the word in much tribulation with joy of the Holy Spirit. So you see this life we’re talking about joy in Philippians. This life of of joy doesn’t start with joy. It starts with, as it says in in First Thessalonians Grace, and then and then peace is part of it in faith and love and Hope and Power is part of it all, rooted in the Gospel and and then in Verse six, it ends with joy in first Thessalonians Chapter one. Sometimes you have to see where some of these books are related to one another, because Thessalonians, like I said 1st and 2nd Thessalonians air up in Macedonia when Paul left Philippi, the next thing you know is he went down to Thessaloniki And so these three epistles being in the northern part of Macedonian, very closely related in Allied. So make it personal. Let Jesus Christ come into your heart in your mind, in your soul, in your life personally open your life to him Cry out And you too with Bo could save my gospel didn’t come and word on Lee but in power in full conviction and by the Holy Spirit Just as all of you know the kind of person I am May God help you to live your life with Jesus Christ And for his gospel in this world, publish until next time with it’s all Greek to me
