Ep 74 – The Triumphal Entry

okay, timing is everything, you know, like in America in the United States we have what’s called March Madness basketball Like crazy and 1 2nd could be the difference between a winner and a loser at the buzzer. They shoot a basketball that goes in and the people that we’re winning now lose one second and here in the bible there is a timeline and in the triumphal entry you have the timeline of jesus actually appearing as the king of the jews, The king of Israel and Vicki and I are gonna go into study the triumphal entry. We’re gonna take two weeks to do that and then we’re gonna study the resurrection and the whole passover uh in the bible. What that’s all about baska as we say it in greek. So join us in our study as we go into the triumphant entry and the resurrection. Hi there Vicki and I are going to be discussing today the triumphal entry and what really excites me when I look at prophecy in the old testament and the new testament, the precision of the evidence is so overwhelming for me and it just reaffirms and strengthens my faith. It encourages me to believe what God is saying in so many other areas. Uh I don’t know how it affects you, but what do you have to say about it? I really enjoyed this study because after reading all four gospels about the triumphal entry, we decided to focus on john and luke right? And it was that we really got so many great scriptures, old testament prophecies that were fulfilled during that week. Yeah, so we’re gonna just go forward and uh just look at what this whole passages about the triumphal entry uh Matthew chapter 20 verse 17 through 19 is not the triumphal entry, it’s right before it. And we’re gonna analyze actually not john mostly Matthew which presents Jesus as The king and then we’re going to also look at Luke chapter 19 in the triumphal entry. But we’re gonna read this passage, go ahead, Vicki, you can read it and this is right before the triumphal entry, Jesus preparing his disciples And Jesus was about to go up to Jerusalem. He took the 12 disciples aside by themselves and on the way he said to them behold, we are going up to Jerusalem and the son of man will be delivered to the chief priests and scribes and they will condemn him to death and will hand him over to the gentiles to Mach and scourged and crucified him and on the third day he will be raised up. Now this was right before the triumphal entry or palm sunday and it’s interesting that here, now jesus is kind of mapping out what’s gonna happen this next week and which we call the passion week and he’s actually going through the steps kind of with his team to say, okay, now guys, this is what’s going to happen and that to me alone is prophetic that he did, that, he knew exactly what was coming up Next. We give you the four places where the triumphal entry is found. It’s in like Vicki said in all four gospels. Matthew 21 Mark 11, Luke 19 and John 12. So you can actually read the synoptics which is Matthew Mark and Luke seeing it from different eyes and then John has a special uh place because John takes that last week from 12 all the way to 19 that last week. Now here’s Matthew 21 The triumphal entry. Vicki pick it up again when they had approached Jerusalem and had come to bethpage at the Mount of Olives. Then jesus sent two disciples saying to them go into the village opposite you and immediately you will find a donkey tied there and a cult with her untie them and bring them to me. If anyone says anything to you, you shall say the Lord has need of them and immediately he will send them. This took place to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet say to your daughter of Zion behold, your king is coming to you gentle price and mounted on a donkey even on a cult, the full of a beast of burden. Now this prophecy as as we see here was in Zechariah 99 and it was being fulfilled right there in Matthew 21. But the interesting thing is that it identifies jesus christ as the king the king of Israel and its very powerful because the, we know that during this time he also went into the temple and began to clean the temple, he did that as the king of Israel, he did that as the Lord of the temple. Uh so up until this time he kept everything hush hush. He told his disciples not the tell anyone you opened the eyes of the blind. He he healed the man who was a paralytic and all of that happened. And here all of a sudden now this is his public uh declaration to the whole country that he is the king of Israel, rejoice greatly. O daughter of Zion shout in triumph O daughter of Jerusalem behold your king is coming to you, he is just and endowed with salvation, humble and mounted on a donkey, even on a colt. The foal of a donkey, what what gets you about this particular verse Vicky the fact that he’s the king and he has all authority given to him under heaven and on earth creator of everything. And he comes to let us know to be like christ, we have to have humility. This was you know, most kings were so just puffed up and all about themselves. But our king jesus made himself come in on a little foal of a donkey and he just, he was so humble and I love that about him and that quality I don’t have naturally, you know being a human being and selfish but christ spirit in us can help us to sense when we’re not humble and we come across, you know, when you see somebody that’s humble, you’re attracted to them. Not fake humility, but true humility. Yeah. And even the donkey, he didn’t sit on the mother donkey, he sat on the foal and even more humility and just, you know, the gentleness of him dealing with an unbroken full of a donkey that no one ever sat on. It says uh in this passage, let’s keep going, Matthew 21 pick it up, hon The disciples went and did just as jesus had instructed them and brought the donkey and the colt and laid their coats timothy on on them and he sat on their coats. Most of the crowd spread their coats in the road and others were cutting branches from the trees and spreading them in the road. So this is hosanna to the highest. They’re getting ready to praise him. Like the king is coming. It was done many times, wasn’t it? In the old testament. Well, they lived lived in boots after the exodus and they also did this after they came out of Babylon. So this was this image with the branches is an image of deliverance from bondage and celebration and you know that that’s what that means. Uh but it’s uh this him octavian is the outer external like a coat. That even in the old testament, Deuteronomy, that that if you had creditors and they want to take everything from you. They couldn’t take that according to the law because that was, that would keep you warm at night. It was your outer garment. There were other garments that were, that were even more delicate and more precious, more to the skin like undergarments. This one is the coat and that’s what they did. They laid their coats on the donkeys and was celebrating, jesus christ continue reading the crowd’s going ahead of him. And those who followed him were shouting, Hosanna to the son of David, blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord Hosanna in the highest. When he had entered Jerusalem, all the city was stirred saying who is this? And the crowds were saying this is the prophet jesus from Nazareth in galilee. It must have been some incredible day to hear the Hosannas uh you know, uh, Lord Save us and and people, some people didn’t know what’s going on. And uh so this is the point where he comes into the city. He goes to the temple and he as King of Israel cleanses the temple. A lot of people don’t get this. They read down and think this, this was jesus all the time. Oh no, he told him early on not to let anyone know who he was, You know that he was the king of Israel, that he, that he had, that he had done the miracle of healing like I said before. But here in this particular case. Now, he really is in his skin, so to speak as king, the king of Israel, the descendant of David, to come and take over and kicks out the money changers And and we’re going to continue what he says there, go for it. So in Matthew, I’m sitting here watching every prophecy that’s being fulfilled right on these pages in the new testament and jesus entered the temple and drove out all those who were buying and selling in the temple and overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who were selling doves and he said to them, it is written. My house shall be called the House of Prayer. But you are making it a robber’s den. So when you read something like that, you know, your mind goes to, okay, where is it written? And you mean this is what the king was supposed to do, this is what the messiah was supposed to do, go in and and the zeal of God in another passion says just ate him up. He was so overtaken with the things of God notice where this comes from in Isaiah 56 7 Vicky even those I will bring to my Holy Mountain and make them joyful in the House of Prayer. They’re burnt offerings and their sacrifices will be acceptable on my altar from my house shall be called a house of Prayer for all the people and it’s for everyone, look what he calls it, he doesn’t call it house for commerce. He doesn’t call it a house for preaching. He doesn’t call it for a house for lecturing. He calls it a house for praying. A house of prayer. Now that should identify the houses of God the places of worship that we’re involved in, is it a house of prayer do we pray? How much do we pray? And in fact let’s just ask the question. What about the house that we live in? Do we pray there? You know? And I think that this kind of centers what the most important thing in God’s heart is all about that his temple, his people, his churches, they need to be about prayer and humility and Brokenness and worship going up towards him, Let’s move on to Jeremiah 7 11. Vicky has this house which is called by my name, become a den of robbers in your sight behold even I have seen it declares the Lord. So the House of prayer and the den of robbers which jesus declared that day were in Jeremiah 7 11 and in Isaiah 56 7. Alright, continue with the story in Matthew 14 and the blind and the lame came to him in the temple and he healed them. But when the chief priests and the scribes saw the wonderful things that he had done and the Children who were shouting in the temple Hosanna Oh save us or please save to the son of David. They became indignant al gonna tell. That’s correct to grieve much. And this is prophecy in psalm 1 18 and psalm 82. Yes. So again, here you have the Children and people celebrating him. Here’s the king, here’s the messiah in his role as the king of Israel and it’s just a beautiful picture of the fulfillment of scripture. And Matthew 21 here in verse 16 it says. And and said to him, do you hear what these Children are saying? And jesus said to them? Yes. Have you never read out of the mouth of infants and nursing babes? You have prepared praise for yourself again. This is a fulfillment of psalm eight and verse two from the mouth of infants and nursing babes thou hast established strength because of thine adversaries to make the enemy and the revengeful to cease to me. The specificity of each prophecy on palm sunday. The triumphal entry is just overwhelming. That all of these prophecies are there uh what comes to your mind of some other incredible prophecies that that have been given to us about this triumphal entry Vicky or about other prophecies? Well, as we’ve been studying about jesus and fulfilling all the prophecies You had said that were 365 old testament prophecies that he fulfilled in this week. I didn’t count how many exactly he has done in just this one week, right before dozens of them. But he predicted to his disciples from the very beginning of this lesson that he was going to meet with the scribes. They were gonna condemn him to death and the people were going to crucify him. He told the whole story in this one week, he kept crying out, letting them know I’m the messiah and that I will rise again. Exactly. And I just think in this week, he, he knew it was so close to his time of going into the grave and just the miracle of christ and his love fantastic with my lovely wife Vicky tom until next time. God bless you. The prophecies in the bible concerning the messiah concerning the coming of jesus christ are so specific that you have to look at the details and the time of his coming is so important. And so I’m gonna just go through about 15 of these prophecies that God gives us. In the old testament concerning the messiah. The messiah would be the seed and offspring of a woman and would crush the head of satan. This is in genesis chapter three and verse 15. And when you look at this verse that God gives us a solution when Adam and he fell into sin, God gave them the solution, he said, and I will put enmity between you and the woman and between your seed and her seed and he shall bruise you on the head and you shall bruise him on the heel. This is probably the first of the Messianic prophecies that he will crush satan’s head. He will destroy a death blow on satan but he would be hurt in the process. That’s what happened at the cross. But it also identifies the woman’s seed, not the man’s seed that he’s gonna come through. That is the first prophecy concerning the messiah. The next one is that he would come from the seed offspring of Abraham with tracking the seed now and would bless all the nations on the earth genesis 12 and verse three it says, and I will bless those who bless you and the one who curses you, I will curse and in you all the families of the earth will be blessed. You can see how people have treated the jewish people all throughout history and you can see God’s judgment and God’s blessing as a result of that. And God has made it very clear to Abraham that he his seed would be what God was gonna bring the messiah through Abraham. And then later on Isaac. And then later on Jacob and then all our on down the line until jesus came next. We have that he would be a prophet like moses to whom God said, he must listen. Uh we must listen to him, Deuteronomy 1815, the Lord Your God will raise up for you a prophet like moses like me from among you from your countrymen. You shall listen to him. And so this is another prophecy that God would raise up a prophet like moses was Deuteronomy 18 and verse 15. Next we have another prophecy in Micah five in verse two that he would be born in the very town of Bethlehem. He would be born in Bethlehem of judea or Judah. But as for you, Bethlehem Ephrata too little to be among the clans of Judah from you, one will go forth for me to be a ruler in Israel and his going forth are from long ago from the days of eternity. Listen to this, his goings forth are from long ago, from the days of eternity. This little baby that’s gonna be born in Bethlehem is from eternity. He comes from eternity and he’s born in Bethlehem of Judah Ephrata is another name for it and that always go, they always go together because there was another Bethlehem in the north in galilee. But he would be born in Bethlehem from Judah from the south. That’s Micah chapter five and verse two, it’s a prophecy about the messiah. It’s a prophecy about the anointed one christos, the messiah christ and then he would be born of a virgin Isaiah 7 14. This is found in uh in Isaiah 7 14. Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign behold a virgin. And when the translators translated it 300 B. C. When the rabbis, the 70 rabbis in alexandria translated this. They put martina for the word Alma instead of a young woman, it was a virgin. Young woman will be with child and bear a son and she will call his name immanuel which translated means God with us. Look at these prophecies. He would have a throne, a kingdom, a dynasty in the house, starting with King David. That he would come from the kingly line of David In 2nd Samuel 7 16. Your house and your kingdom shall endure before me forever. Your throne shall be established forever. God promised it that that his throne would come from David. And and track it down that when you go to the new testament in Matthew it it goes all the way back to David’s line. He would be called a wonderful counselor. Mighty God the everlasting father the Prince of Peace and would possess an everlasting kingdom, Isaiah 96 through seven. And then uh in this verse for a child will be born to us, A son will be given to us. The government will rest on his shoulders. His name shall be called Wonderful counselor, the Mighty God, the eternal father. The Prince of peace. What a beautiful prophecy about this little baby that’s gonna be born and who it really is that this child will be born. It says the government will rest on his shoulder and his name will be called Wonderful counselor. Mighty God, Eternal father, Prince of peace. We’re talking about jesus. This is this is how this verse of scripture unpacks. Now, here is the verse that we’re looking at concerning the context of our teaching. Zechariah nine verse nine and 10 is talking about the donkey and the foal of a donkey rejoice greatly O daughter of Zion shout in triumph o daughter of Jerusalem behold your king is coming to you, He is just and endowed with salvation, humble and mounted on a donkey, even on a colt, the foal of a donkey. Now the Lord jesus christ would constantly tell his disciples and the people he healed. It’s not time. Don’t tell anyone, keep it to yourself. But at the very end, right before the passion we began right there at the triumphant triumphant entry where he declares himself to be the king of the jews, he’s he’s making it very clear that he is the king of Israel and when the Pharisees are trying to hush his disciples, jesus christ says if they stopped cheering. If they stopped hallelujah and Hosanna calling out Hosanna that the rocks would literally have to cry out. Now he is manifesting himself and that incident was the coming in from the prophecy of Zechariah chapter nine and verse nine, Riding on a donkey, the fold of a donkey, it wasn’t just the donkey, it was also the little foal of the donkey that had never been ridden on, never been broken, jesus, the messiah. The christ sat on it as they put their coats on that little donkey, that foal of a donkey and he began to go into the eastern gate, he went into Jerusalem the way it was predicted right here It happened in in Luke chapter 19. And we’re gonna look at that as well. And then of course he says, I will cut off the chariot for me, for him and the horse from Jerusalem and the bow of war will be cut off and he will speak peace to the nations and his Dominion will be from sea to sea and from the river to the ends of the earth. What a fabulous passage of scripture. He would also be pierced for our transgressions and crushed for our iniquities. Isaiah 53 and verse five he was pierced through for our transgressions, crushed for our iniquities, the chastening of our well being will fall on him and by his scourging were healed. This is Jesus who was hanging on the cross who took the beating and was pierced for our sins, literally dug in. It literally means to dig in the hebrew and this happened to him uh 2000 years ago. He would be, he would die among the wicked ones, but would be buried with the rich Isaiah 53 verse nine. He, his grave will assign with wicked men. Yet he was with a rich man in his death because he had done no violence, nor was there any deceit in his mouth fulfilled again every one of these prophecies when jesus christ died, they took him in and and a rich man gave his grave for jesus to go joseph of Arimathea. What a beautiful story that we have here and then he would be resurrected from the grave. For God would not allow his Holy One to suffer decay psalm 16 and verse 10 for your for you will not abandon my soul to shield, nor will you allow your holy one to undergo decay prophecies from 1000 years before Jesus was even born. That he would, when he died, he would not remain dead in that grave would not decay but would rise physically from the grave. He would come again from the clouds of heaven as the son of Man, Daniel 7, 13 and 14, I kept looking in the night visions and behold with the clouds of heaven. One like the Son of man was coming and he came up to the ancient of days and was presented before him and to him was given Dominion and glory kingdom and the kingdom that all the people and nations and men of every language might serve him. His Dominion is an everlasting Dominion which will not pass away and his kingdom is one which will not be destroyed. He would be the son of Righteousness for all who revere him and look for his coming again, Malachi 42 for But for you who fear my name, the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its wings and you will go forth and skip about like calves from the stall. These are the prophecies. Zechariah chapter 12 verse 10. He is the one whom Israel will one day recognized as the one who they pierced, causing bitter grief to come upon them. This is jesus, there’s so many prophecies that we could talk about, but this is jesus and the one that I’m really presenting to you is will you let him ride upon your heart like that little donkey? It never was broken and maybe no, no one had been able to break you or you’ve got your own will. But jesus christ came in fulfilling all the prophecies that you would allow him. You know to just throw your coats on that little donkey and allow him to come into your heart and let him take over in your life, surrender your life. And you know it’s so simple it is just to pray to him to surrender to him and say, oh father, God, thank you for loving me and jesus, thank you for coming in fulfilling all these prophecies to bleed and die on the cross for me. Please come in my heart and save me from my sins. I believe you died for me and that you arose again from the dead for me. Save me today in jesus name. And listen, these prophecies are just about a few, there are over 365 prophecies, we just took a few of them so that you might see how Jesus Christ not only died was buried but a rose again from the dead. To give you joy, empower and victory and change in your life. God bless you.
